Do you know a night that’s not just an ordinary night but a blessing from the Almighty Allah?
The night on which the perfect book of guidance was sent to us. A night which is one but
better than a thousand months. It’s Lyla tul Qadr (Night of Power). Surah al Qadr is the 97th
Surah of the Quran.
Iqra
إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةِ ٱلْقَدْرِ ١ Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory. 97:1
As mentioned undoubtedly the holy book of perfect guidance Al Quran was sent to us on
Lyla tul Qadr. This emphasises the importance of the value of this blessed night. The
Prophet Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him was revealed with Iqra in the cave of
Hira on the blessed night of Qadr. If we contemplate our guidance is sourced through this
night.
Al Quran is a miracle given to our Prophet Sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam. A book which
hasn’t been changed even a single word since revelation as it’s protected by Allah Himself
and it is the only book which has been memorized by many. The Quran is a book containing
numerous treasures from healing powers to lessons to reflect upon, from benefits to a
source of relief. How much we thank Allah for this Ne’mah is less.
Power
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ ٢
لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْر
٣
And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is?
The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months.
97:2-3 Allah explains to us what the night of Power certainly is. He (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) says this
night is better than a thousand months.
Ever wondered that people who lived thousands of years before our era had had very long
lives hence their worship would also be immense compared to ours. But Alhamdulillah Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has decreed upon us a night that is better than a thousand months. If
we calculate, performing prayer on this night gives one the ajr of worship of 83 years and 4
months. If one gets fortunate to achieve this night will be blessed by having worshiped for 83 years
and 4 months. The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Theِ life span for my Ummah is from sixty years to seventy [years].”ِ
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Vol. 4, Book 10, Hadith 2331)
Therefore, this blessed night bestows upon us a beautiful opportunity to get a full lifespan of
worship.
Angels
تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّأَمْرٍۢ That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter. 97:4
Allah says in Surah Al Qadr that in this night by permission of Allah angels and rooh
descends. Jibreel ‘Alayhis Salaam comes down with angels to greet the obedient slaves of
Allah. It’s a matter of great honor for the one engaged in the remembrance of Allah to be
greeted by Hazrat Jibreel ‘Alayhis Salaam. Just imagine all your efforts of worship being
recognized and rewarded, how great a feeling, this can be achieved by worshiping with
sincere faith and firm belief.
Peace
سَلَـٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ ٥ It is all peace until the break of dawn. 97:4
In the final verse, Allah says it’s all peace until dawn. The entire night is given to the
believers to worship and gain closeness to Allah and it extends until dawn breaks.
Context
In one narration its.said that the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam.had a
dream of a person from Ummayad climbing the pulpit due to which the Prophet (P.B.U.H)
became very sad, therefore Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala sent down Surah Qadr to console
his habib that Lyla tul Qadr is better than thousand months of Ummayad rule.
Conclusion
Reciting Surah Qadr has various benefits and the Surah is full of virtue. The Surah gives us
glad tidings of the blessed night of Qadr. knowingly or unknowingly we indulge in sins
throughout the year but if we contemplate that Allah Rabbulizzat has provided us with such a
precious gift of forgiveness through this night then only will we understand how immense
blessings it beholds.
